The first inaugural lecture in linguistics at this university was in 1964. In particular, that lecture, delivered by the late Professor Robert G Armstrong, who was at the Institute of African Studies, was in the area of comparative linguistics. Professor Ayo Bamgbose’s followed in 1972 and was on what linguistics should be doing in a developing nation.
