Description:

In the beginning, ibadàn started as a settlement of some radicals from nearby Yorúbá towns. Historians do not completely agree on the actual date of the founding of the first settlement. This is not surprising since recorded history were scarce in those early days of Yorúbá History.
Both Rev. S. Johnson|S and Chief M. O. Ogún-mölá 16 claimed that the first settlement was destroyed by the order of Aláäfin Sängó. Chief
M. O. Ogúnmöla, in his book, claimed that Sàngó reigned in 1077 AD?| i.e. in the 11th Cen-tury. However, there are others that claim that the Foundation of the first ibädän Settlement was around 1580AD. The two dates (1077AD and 1580AD) are not convincing, since they imply that there were centuries unaccounted for between the period of Lágelú and his children’s reign and that of Chief Máyê, reputed to be the first ruler (Olóri Kinni) of

Ibadan Empire — Toye Ogunyemi
