Religious and Ethnic Politics in Nigeria: A Burden We Must Carry

· 1:15:10

Can Nigeria build a common national future without confronting the religious and ethnic identities that continue to shape its politics?

Nigeria's political landscape cannot be fully understood without examining the complex relationship between ethnicity, religion, regional interests, historical experiences, and the struggle for political power. From debates over representation and resource allocation to questions of national identity, constitutional governance, and security, these forces continue to influence how Nigerians understand the state and their place within it.

But must religious and ethnic identity remain a permanent burden on national development? Or can Nigeria build institutions that accommodate its diversity without allowing identity to become a tool of exclusion, political mobilisation, or competition for state power?

In this episode, Think Yoruba First examines the historical roots and contemporary consequences of religious and ethnic politics in Nigeria, exploring why these identities remain politically significant and what their persistence means for the country's future.

The challenge is not to erase Nigeria's ethnic and religious identities. These identities are deeply connected to history, community, culture, and belonging. The challenge is to prevent them from becoming barriers to equal citizenship, accountable leadership, and peaceful political competition.

For Yorubaland and Nigeria more broadly, this conversation raises an important question: Can a country remain genuinely united when its citizens continue to interpret political power through the lens of ethnic and religious belonging?

Perhaps the burden we must carry is not diversity itself, but the responsibility to build institutions capable of managing it fairly.

Join Think Yoruba First for thoughtful conversations on history, identity, political development, governance, and the future of Yorubaland and Nigeria.
