History
Ilé-Ifẹ̀ is the cradle of the Yorùbá people. From Ifẹ̀ grew the kingdoms of Ọ̀yọ́, Ìjẹ̀ṣà, Ẹ̀gbá, Ìjẹ̀bú, Ondo and Èkìtì, each with its own Ọba and a shared language, faith and culture.
The nineteenth century brought the Yorùbá wars, which ended with the Kiriji peace treaty of 1886, and then British colonial rule. Under Chief Ọbáfẹ́mi Awólọ́wọ̀ the Western Region led Nigeria in free primary education, and that legacy still shapes our work.
Demography
The Yorùbá are one of the largest ethnic groups in Africa. Lagos, Ìbàdàn, Abẹ́òkúta, Òṣogbo, Akurẹ́ and Adó-Èkìtì are major Yorùbá cities.
Community Life
TYF Nigeria is headquartered in Lagos and runs our education programs, food bank drives and scholarships, and the annual Yorùbá Global Conference.
Language and Culture
Yorùbá is spoken across the South-West and taught in schools, but many young people in the cities are growing up without it. Our language and history classes exist to change that.
