YORUBA women are well-known as traders within the internal marketing system of Nigeria. Indeed, they play an important part in the distribution of goods throughout West Africa for they are engaged in trade activities in most countries along the West African coast. The fact that these women have as one of their roles that of intermediary in the distribution network does not make them unique among West African women. Since the early twentieth century and, in a few cases, before that time, women of other West African societies have engaged in trade.
