He was the first president of Togo after independence. He was a Yoruba man who spoke Yoruba, German, French, English& Portuguese fluently.

After graduating from the London School of Economics, he worked for Unilever, eventually becoming the general manager of the company’s African business.

Following World War II, Olympio became a significant figure in Togo’s attempts for independence, and his party won the 1958 election, making him Prime Minister of the country.

His dominance was further entrenched when Togo gained independence and he won the 1961 election, becoming the country’s first president. He was killed during the Togolese coup of 1963.
